Building
a Brand, in the traditional sense, is something
that takes place over time. If you think og larger
brands such as coca-cola and Gap, they have enormous
budgets, most small business of course do not.
So,
we have to build our own brand on a budget, therefore,
its imperative that everything gives the same consistent
message over and over again. This comes down to
Business Cards, Letterheads, Website Design, leaflets
and vehicle banners. Everything must be consistent.
One
way in which to do this, is to have continuity with
the people who produce your image. The other way,
is not to change this image every 6 months or so.
Once you've got it down right, that should be it.
When
we first started out, the number of marketing companies
we saw before we decided to do it ourselves, many
of them said "you need a new logo" as
they're first point of call. The question was of
course, if we have a new logo, just how much would
it cost, and how much business would that bring
in?
Wouldnt
that money be better spent on producing leaflets,
or maybe on Search Engine optimisation, etc etc.
It is useful to have a vibrant and unique logo,
but not at the expense of other more worthwhile
marketing ventures.
Branding
does take time, but is well worth it, as once the
recognition sets in, you can start to become better
with your marketing, but to begin with, you need
to brand your business.
One
of the other problems with branding, and ive had
this phone call a few times now, is where people
try and sell you your logo in fron of thousands
of people every saturday - thats right - football
stadiums.
Look
at it this way, 95% of the UK's population are familiar
with GAP, the clothing store. But only 20% of people
shop there.
Why?
Brand values. If you simply have a logo with your
name on it, then is it clear about what you do?
Is it clear what product you sell? Branding is about
selling your Brand values everytime you advertise.
Its not just about logo placement.

Difficult
to sell what the brand is, and difficult to
change - the brand belongs in the mind of the
consumer, regardless of what you think it is.

Recognition
of your business, product or service over a
period of time will help improve sales and remove
the barriers to making a purchase.
